About us
Mission
To deliver scalable, scientifically validated solutions that enable a circular nutrient economy, strengthen agriculture, and protect national water systems.
Vision
To become the leading global authority in circular nutrient management and ecological infrastructure development
Who Are We
The American Institute for Circular Nutrient Ecology (AICNE) is a federally-aligned, public–private applied research and implementation institute to be headquartered in Toledo, Ohio (Lucas County). We are designed to serve as the premier national hub for circular nutrient management and beneficial sediment reuse.
AICNE exists to bridge the critical “implementation gap” that has long existed between exist between laboratory science and large-scale industrial execution. While research institutions generate breakthrough findings in soil microbiology and ecological restoration, those discoveries rarely translate into deployable, field-scale solutions that state and federal agencies can rely upon.
We change that.
By integrating soil geochemical characterization, microbiology, microbial genome signaling and ecological restoration science, AICNE provides the technical framework necessary for government agencies, port authorities, agricultural operators, and environmental stakeholders to act — with confidence, compliance, and measurable outcomes.
Salim Shamsu-Deen Mohammed is a Ph.D. researcher in soil health and water quality and the founder of the American Institute for Circular Nutrient Economies (AICNE). His core competencies span soil biogeochemistry, microbial genomics, nutrient cycling, and environmental data analysis. His work focuses on transforming dredged sediments into sustainable soil solutions that improve nutrient retention, enhance agricultural productivity, and protect water resources. Through science-driven innovation and collaboration with federal and state agencies, he is advancing practical approaches to support sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration.
